About The Role
The Athletic produces over 130 daily and weekly podcasts that are free to listeners on platforms like Apple and Spotify, and we are rapidly growing our in-house ad sales and operations team to sell and deliver ads on these podcasts. In this role you will be responsible for owning the end to end sales process for new ad partners who want to get their brand/product in the ears of our listeners. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining and nurturing relationships with existing ad partners in order to drive renewals and support ongoing business. Los Angeles, CA or New York, NY are preferred locations. Some travel will be required, it likely won’t be more than 1-2 trips/month.
Own the end-to-end sales process.
Identify ad partners that have a brand/product that is a strong fit with our listener base, and navigate to the appropriate decision maker at each partner.
Take the lead on scheduling meetings with decision makers, and lead the pitch for why our shows are a good fit with the partner’s advertising needs.
Negotiate a campaign’s ad format, frequency, duration, cost, and other key terms.
Meet ambitious individual and team-level quarterly revenue targets.
Share partner insights and sales lessons across the team.
Represent The Athletic brand well.
You have at least two years of sales experience under your belt though the role can be scaled to more experienced sellers as well. Podcast ad sales experience is a nice to have but not a must have.
You are good at building on a foundation that’s already in place but enjoy having the freedom and flexibility to make things better: better sales tools, better communication, better processes, etc.
You love the sales process and are someone who is motivated by, rather than discouraged by, ambitious targets.
You are a self starter and are good at getting work done without someone looking over your shoulder.
You are an excellent communicator over email, on the phone, and in person.
You sweat the details.
You are good at working independently but enjoy being part of a team.
You like hearing an ad-read on a podcast and thinking hey, I made that happen!
